Gold getting ready to jump? Buy below $1,291/oz

It’s been a few weeks since I last covered gold. There hasn’t really been much to say. The precious metal has traded in a tight $30 range, since the end of March. Such periods of inaction have been relatively rare over the last decade, but I wonder now if there are increasing signs that pressure is building for a break to the upside.

Aggregate demand for silver reached record level in 2013 - The Silver Institute

Total physical silver demand rose by 13 percent in 2013 to an all-time high, according to World Silver Survey 2014, released today by the Silver Institute. This was primarily driven by the 76 percent increase in retail investment in bars and coins coupled with a sturdy recovery in jewelry and silverware fabrication. On the supply side, silver scrap fell by 24 percent, experiencing the largest drop on record to reach its lowest level since 2001. The silver price averaged $23.79 in 2013, the third highest nominal average price on record, in a particularly volatile year for the entire precious metals complex.

Baltic Dry Index at 987; time to sell in May?

It’s been too long since I last looked at the Baltic Dry Index. This morning I almost wish I hadn’t. According to the latest reading of the Baltic Dry, which tracks 23 of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, it stands at 987, having slumped in early April. This does not bode at all well for the general economic outlook and is particularly unwelcome news for mining stocks.

Buy the GDX below $24.36

The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX) is an Exchange Traded Fund, which acts as an excellent proxy for the health of the gold mining sector. It seeks to replicate, as closely as possible, the NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index. Although the GDX doesn’t contain any British stocks, it can provide a useful guide to the direction London listed gold miners might take. In the last month it has shown a great deal of resilience. Could this be the beginning of a long awaited new boom?
